For logistics teams operating in cold storage, frozen distribution centers and high-cold outdoor warehouse yards, lithium-ion powered pallet trucks are widely adopted for efficient, zero-emission material handling, but many new operators have doubts about their performance and safety in low-temperature scenarios. This article sorts out the most common public questions and gives practical, operation-friendly guidance for reference.
The first most frequently asked question is whether low temperature will cause permanent damage to the lithium battery of the pallet truck. As is determined by the inherent chemical properties of lithium-ion cells, the activity of internal active substances will decrease when the ambient temperature drops below 0℃, leading to a temporary slight drop in discharge efficiency and available capacity. This is a normal physical change, not permanent damage to the battery pack, and the performance will return to full level after the temperature of the battery pack rises to the standard operating range through proper low-load pre-run. Operators are advised not to forcibly run the equipment with full heavy loads immediately after taking it out of a long-term low-temperature idle state.
The second common question is what is the correct way to store the pallet truck during off-periods in cold seasons. When the equipment is not used for more than 48 consecutive hours, it is recommended to move it to a dry, semi-heated storage room where the ambient temperature is kept above 5℃ as much as possible. If the equipment has to be parked in an open low-temperature yard, operators should ensure the battery pack has a remaining power of no less than 40% before long-term parking, and perform a supplementary charge every 7 days to avoid over-discharge caused by low temperature self-discharge, which will affect subsequent use experience.
The third common question is about the precautions of long-time continuous operation in cold storage. Most standard lithium-ion powered pallet trucks can adapt to the cold storage operation environment within the rated temperature range. Before entering the cold storage for formal operation, operators can drive the vehicle back and forth for 3 to 5 times with no load to preheat the power system and hydraulic components, and check the flexibility of the sealing parts of the walking mechanism every week to avoid lubricant solidification affecting operation smoothness. It is not recommended to modify the equipment structure privately to adapt to ultra-low temperature environments that exceed the official rated operating range.
The fourth question is about the special maintenance points for cold environment use. Operators must not use open fire or high-temperature heat sources to directly bake the cold battery pack to speed up temperature rise, which will bring unnecessary safety risks. It is recommended to complete the whole charging process in an environment with temperature above 0℃, which can ensure the charging efficiency and prolong the overall service life of the battery pack.
