When enterprises conduct cross-border procurement of lithium-ion powered forklifts, the battery component usually accounts for a relatively high proportion of the total product cost, and its service performance directly affects the whole service life of the forklift and the normal operation of on-site material handling work. Many procurement practitioners tend to focus on the unit price and delivery period in the early negotiation stage, while ignoring the detailed clarification of battery-related warranty clauses, which may lead to unnecessary disputes and economic losses in the subsequent use stage.
First, it is necessary to clarify the definition scope of normal battery use stipulated in the warranty clauses. Both parties need to confirm the allowable working temperature and humidity range of the battery, the standard of effective charge and discharge cycles within the warranty period, and the basic requirements for daily routine maintenance, to avoid ambiguous descriptions that may be interpreted arbitrarily. Buyers can align their actual working scenarios with suppliers in advance, to confirm whether the conventional high-intensity operation mode in their warehouses can be included in the normal use scope of the warranty.
Second, the specific content of warranty coverage shall be specified in written form. It is suggested to confirm whether the battery management system and other matching core accessories are included in the warranty scope, and clarify the exact starting point of the warranty period. The agreed option can be the date of completion of on-site installation and debugging after the goods arrive at the buyer’s destination, rather than the date of shipment from the supplier’s factory, which can effectively avoid the loss of effective warranty period caused by long logistics transit or port detention.
Third, both parties shall fully communicate on the exemption clauses of battery warranty. All scenarios that are excluded from warranty protection shall be listed clearly, including unauthorized disassembly of battery components, use of non-matching chargers that do not meet specification requirements, and operation in working conditions far exceeding the rated parameters. No vague general exemption clauses that are not defined in detail shall be reserved, to ensure both sides have clear and consistent judgment standards for warranty qualification.
Fourth, the cross-border after-sales response process for warranty faults shall be clarified. Both parties can confirm the maximum response time after the buyer submits a warranty application, the division of logistics costs for maintenance or replacement of spare parts, and the specific implementation plan for on-site inspection if needed. Proper arrangement of these contents can effectively reduce the negative impact caused by cross-border information asymmetry and long-distance transportation.
Fully clarifying the above battery-related warranty clauses during the procurement negotiation stage helps to reduce unnecessary follow-up disputes, and builds a solid foundation for long-term stable cooperative relations between procurement suppliers and buyers.
