Standard forklift versus multi-directional electric forklift for long-load handling in narrow aisles(figure1)

Modern warehousing and logistics scenarios often need to handle long-length loads such as metal profiles, wooden plates, construction pipes and custom furniture parts, while many storage facilities are designed with narrow aisles to maximize total storage capacity, bringing new challenges to forklift operation. This comparison analyzes the actual performance of two types of common forklift equipment in such scenarios, without extreme judgment of absolute advantages or disadvantages.

For standard forklifts, their operation logic relies on traditional turning of the whole vehicle to adjust moving direction. When handling long loads that extend far beyond the vehicle body, the extra length of the load will take up large extra space in the turning path, which requires operators to reserve enough buffer space to avoid collision with side shelves or stacked goods. In narrow aisle scenarios below 3 meters, standard forklifts usually need to adjust direction back and forth for multiple times to complete the steering, which will extend the single operation time, and may also cause accidental scratch of goods and shelf structures during repeated movement. For warehouses with low daily long-load handling frequency and aisle width above 3.5 meters, standard forklifts can still meet basic use requirements with relatively low procurement and daily maintenance cost.

For multi-directional electric forklifts, their special wheel steering structure supports multiple moving modes including forward, backward, lateral side moving and diagonal traveling. When handling long loads in narrow aisles, operators can adjust the placement direction of the long load to be parallel with the aisle, and drive the vehicle to move laterally along the aisle direction directly, no extra steering space is needed. This feature allows the equipment to pass smoothly in aisles with width of 2 meters or even smaller, no need to reserve extra space for the sweeping path of long extended loads. For storage facilities with high daily long-load handling volume and limited aisle space, this type of equipment can effectively reduce the space occupied by the operation channel, so as to expand the total available storage area of the whole warehouse.

When making actual selection, warehouse operators can combine their own daily operation volume, average aisle width, load type and budget arrangement to make the proper decision. No matter which type of equipment is put into use, all operators need to receive formal professional operation training, and complete pre-operation safety check of vehicle status and load fixing condition before work, to guarantee stable and safe operation process.
