When choosing electric material handling equipment for warehouse and adjacent semi-open zones, many operation teams often confuse the positioning of dedicated indoor electric forklifts and outdoor-rated electric forklifts suitable for covered yard duties, which may cause extra operation cost or hidden safety risks in long-term application.
The core design of indoor-use electric forklifts is fully oriented to the closed, strictly controlled indoor operation environment. This type of equipment adopts low-noise motor components to keep the working noise below the acceptable threshold for long-term indoor staff work, and uses non-marking solid tires that will not leave residual scratches on epoxy or polished cement floors. Its body size and turning radius are optimized for narrow aisle scenarios, which can smoothly pass through the 2.8 to 3.5 meter wide channels common in standard shelf warehouses. The protection level of its internal circuit system meets the basic requirements of dust prevention in clean indoor environment, and it will not produce any exhaust emission during operation, which is very friendly for storing food, electronic components or other sensitive goods that have strict requirements on air cleanliness.
For outdoor-rated electric forklifts designed for covered yard duties, the design priority is adjusted to adapt to the semi-open operation environment of the covered yard. This type of equipment retains the zero-emission advantage of electric drive to avoid exhaust accumulation in the semi-enclosed covered space, and upgrades the protection level of the whole machine to prevent the impact of occasional rain splashes and small amount of accumulated water on the ground on the circuit system. Its chassis height is appropriately increased to avoid collision with small protrusions on the rough ground of the yard, and the tire pattern is designed with deeper anti-skid lines, which can maintain stable traction on the ground with a small amount of sand and gravel. Its load-bearing structure also has a reasonable redundancy design, which can adapt to the frequent loading and unloading of pallet goods at the connection between the covered yard and the external transport vehicle.
It is not recommended to use the two types of equipment across scenarios for a long time. If a common indoor electric forklift is used in the covered yard for a long time, the insufficient circuit protection level will increase the probability of failure in humid environment, and the non-marking tire will wear much faster on the gravel scattered ground, increasing the annual maintenance cost. If the outdoor-rated model is used in the narrow indoor channel for a long time, the larger turning radius will reduce the passing efficiency of stacking operation, and the deep patterned tire may leave stubborn marks on the smooth indoor floor, bringing extra work to the daily site cleaning.
When selecting equipment, you can count the proportion of operation areas first. If more than 70% of the daily operation tasks are completed in the closed indoor storage area, the dedicated indoor electric forklift can bring better use experience. If more than 60% of the operation scenarios are located in the covered yard and semi-open loading and unloading area, the outdoor-rated electric forklift matching the working condition is a more appropriate choice. You can also combine the actual conditions of the goods to be handled, the width of the passage and the ground condition to make comprehensive adjustment, so as to obtain the best cost performance of equipment use under the premise of meeting the safety specifications.
