Against the general trend of low-carbon transformation in the manufacturing industry, more and more small manufacturers are starting to consider replacing traditional internal combustion forklifts with electric models, to meet increasingly strict environmental protection requirements, reduce long-term use costs, and create a safer operating environment in closed workshops. Unlike large manufacturing enterprises with sufficient capital reserves, complete facility systems and professional logistics management teams, small and micro manufacturing entities often encounter a series of unique practical obstacles in the process of promoting the replacement.
The first prominent challenge comes from the pressure of up-front capital investment. The initial purchase cost of a single electric forklift is usually higher than that of a fuel-powered model with the same load capacity, which takes up a non-negligible proportion in the tight cash flow of small manufacturers. Most small factories need to allocate limited funds to raw material procurement, employee salary payment and production line maintenance, and it usually takes a long payback cycle to offset the initial investment by saving fuel and daily maintenance costs. Once the enterprise faces seasonal order fluctuations, the capital turnover pressure will be further increased.
The second core challenge lies in the adaptation of supporting charging infrastructure. Many small manufacturers rent plant areas that do not allow large-scale power grid transformation and fixed charging pile installation. Their original warehouse and workshop layout does not reserve a special charging and battery replacement area, and the existing power load of the plant cannot support the simultaneous charging of multiple electric forklifts. Without reasonable pre-planning, situations such as sudden power loss of forklifts in the peak material handling period may occur, which will disrupt the normal production rhythm.
The third common challenge is the lack of operation and maintenance experience and personnel training. Most front-line operators of small factories are accustomed to the operation logic of traditional internal combustion forklifts, and they need a certain period of learning to master the correct use of electric forklifts, daily battery maintenance, and common fault judgment. There is no special logistics equipment maintenance post in most small manufacturing sites, and improper operation will reduce the service life of forklift batteries and increase unnecessary additional costs.
The fourth challenge is the matching of working condition adaptability. For small manufacturers that carry out two-shift or three-shift continuous production, the standard battery life of ordinary electric forklifts may not be able to cover the full load operation demand of the whole shift, and the additional configuration of spare batteries will further increase the input cost. These obstacles are not insurmountable, and small manufacturers can realize the smooth transition of material handling electrification by making phased transformation plans combined with their own operation characteristics.
