When enterprises select and deploy electric forklifts for daily material handling operations, the IP rating is always an easily overlooked but highly practical parameter that directly influences the equipment’s stable performance and service life in specific working surroundings. The full name of IP rating is Ingress Protection, a unified standard formulated by the International Electrotechnical Commission to evaluate the protection capacity of electrical enclosures against external solid and liquid substances. A standard IP marking consists of two digits, and each digit corresponds to a specific protection capacity dimension, instead of a vague general performance description.
The first digit of the IP rating refers to the protection level against solid foreign objects, ranging from 0 to 6. The lowest level 0 means no special protection for internal electrical components, while level 6 means the enclosure can completely prevent fine dust from entering the internal structure even after long-term operation in heavy dust environment. The second digit refers to the protection level against liquid intrusion, ranging from 0 to 8. Level 0 means no liquid protection at all, level 4 can prevent splashed water from damaging internal components, and level 8 supports continuous operation in specified deep water environment under standard test conditions.
For different industrial working scenarios, the corresponding suitable IP rating requirements are quite different. For conventional indoor dry warehousing, light assembly workshop and other similar surroundings with only small amount of floating dust and no liquid splashing, electric forklifts with IP20 to IP40 rating can fully meet daily operation demands. For food processing workshops, cold chain storage centers and other scenarios that require frequent high-pressure water flushing on the ground and keep high ambient humidity all year round, electric forklifts with IP54 or higher rating are recommended to avoid short circuit risk caused by moisture entering the electric control system. For open-air construction sites, gravel storage yards and other scenarios with heavy dust and frequent rain exposure, it is proper to choose electric forklifts with IP65 or higher rating to prevent dust accumulation on electrical contact points.
It is worth noting that enterprises do not need to blindly pursue the highest IP rating when purchasing electric forklifts, as excessive protection level will bring unnecessary extra procurement cost that does not match the actual demand. The most economic and reasonable solution is to confirm the most severe working conditions in the operation site first, and select the corresponding IP rating that can cover these conditions. Besides, regular maintenance checks on the sealing strips of electrical enclosures are also necessary to maintain the original protection performance for a long period.
