When planning or renovating a warehouse, most operators prioritize storage capacity, throughput speed and cost control, but aisle width, a seemingly trivial infrastructure indicator, often acts as a core constraint that runs through the whole process of selecting electric warehouse handling equipment. Many operators make the common mistake of purchasing popular high-load electric handling trucks without measuring the actual aisle size on site, which leads to frequent scraping of shelves, unsmooth vehicle turning, and even the actual operation efficiency is far lower than the expected value in daily use.
The first core reference standard for matching comes from the basic classification of aisle width. For wide aisles above 3.5 meters, which are usually set in large circulation distribution centers with frequent personnel and material cross-flow, most conventional electric pallet trucks and counterbalance electric forklifts can operate stably in such scenarios, and there is no need to additionally customize the body size of the handling equipment. Operators can focus on matching the load capacity, lifting height and battery life of the equipment according to their daily operation volume, which can give full play to the cost advantage of standard models.
For medium aisles between 2.8 meters and 3.5 meters, the selection logic needs to make appropriate trade-offs between operation flexibility and space utilization. In this scenario, the conventional counterbalance forklift will have insufficient turning space, so it is more appropriate to choose electric reach stacker equipment with the front extending fork arm design. This kind of equipment does not need to reserve extra space for the body to turn when picking and placing goods, which can adapt to the aisle width within the specified range, and will not bring too much extra cost while increasing the actual storage density of the warehouse by a considerable margin compared with the wide aisle layout.
As for narrow aisles below 2.8 meters, it is necessary to select special electric handling equipment designed for narrow scenarios, such as very narrow aisle turret trucks, which can complete the goods picking and placing operation through the rotation of the fork head without moving the whole body, and the minimum passage width required can be as low as 1.6 meters, which can maximize the utilization rate of warehouse space. It should be noted that in this scenario, operators need to do a good job in the pre-inspection of the ground flatness, and provide sufficient supporting equipment use training for staff, to ensure that the operation process remains safe and stable.
Finally, when matching the aisle width with the electric handling equipment, it is also necessary to reserve a certain amount of safety margin appropriately, rather than select the equipment strictly according to the aisle size calculated at the theoretical minimum value. This can avoid the operation risk caused by the slight deviation of the driving path of different operators, and also leave enough space for the subsequent adjustment of the shelf layout, to create more flexible conditions for the long-term operation of the warehouse.
