Opportunity charging for lithium-ion forklifts refers to the behavior of supplementing battery power during short operation breaks such as shift gaps, loading waiting intervals, rather than waiting for the battery to discharge to the cut-off threshold completely. This operation mode effectively reduces the downtime of the forklift fleet, and improves the overall turnover efficiency of warehousing and logistics links. Without standardized operation guidance, improper charging behaviors are likely to bring hidden safety risks to on-site operations, which requires all relevant operation personnel to strictly follow the specified safety procedures.
Before starting any opportunity charging cycle, operators need to complete a set of basic safety checks first. They should observe the appearance of the lithium-ion battery pack to confirm there is no obvious deformation, outer coating damage or unusual leakage traces, check the charging plug and socket to remove dust, debris or residual moisture on the connection contacts. The surrounding area of the charging station should be kept clear of flammable packaging materials, paper waste and other sundries, the reserved ventilation space around the battery pack should not be blocked by stacked goods, and the position of the charging zone should avoid direct long-time sunlight exposure and accumulated water in low-lying areas.
During the whole opportunity charging process, operators should not dismantle the fixed protective shell of the battery pack without authorization, and do not cover the dedicated heat dissipation vents of the battery module with forklift body accessories or other sundries for a long time. The output voltage and current parameters of the charging equipment should be kept consistent with the nominal parameters specified for the matching lithium-ion battery, and operators are not allowed to adjust the charging power setting beyond the normal range without permission. Regular patrol checks are required during charging, and if any abnormal warning signal from the battery management system is detected, operators need to cut off the power supply of the charging equipment immediately.
After the opportunity charging process is completed, operators should disconnect the charging plug from the forklift socket first, then turn off the main power switch of the charging equipment. It is not allowed to drag the charging cable to move the forklift, and the charging cable should be hung on the dedicated fixed support after use to avoid being rolled and crushed by passing vehicles which may lead to insulation layer damage. The duration of each single opportunity charging shall not exceed the recommended maximum supplementary time specified for the corresponding battery type, and operators should record the charging operation status truthfully in the on-site operation log. Regular skill training for on-site operation personnel can further standardize daily charging behaviors, effectively reduce the occurrence of safety accidents, and extend the service life of the lithium-ion forklift fleet properly.
