Modern large manufacturing plants, distribution centers and storage facilities usually cover a wide area, where frequent cross-zone material transport is required across distances ranging from dozens of meters to hundreds of meters. Choosing the right electric pallet truck for these long run scenarios has a direct impact on overall operation efficiency, labor fatigue level and long-term operation cost.
For the operator-down pallet truck, the operator walks alongside the equipment during the whole transport process. This type of pallet truck features a compact structure and small turning radius, which enables flexible operation in narrow aisles and spaces with limited movement room. Its initial purchase cost stays at a relatively reasonable level, and the routine maintenance process is simple with fewer easily worn parts. However, when it comes to long runs over 50 meters, the operator needs to walk the whole distance with loaded cargo, which will bring extra physical burden and increase operation fatigue after long-time shifts. The average moving speed will also be limited for safety consideration when operators get tired, leading to longer cycle time for each transport task.
For the operator-platform truck, it comes with a dedicated standing platform for operators to stay on during moving. The operator does not need to walk for the whole transport route during long runs, which effectively reduces physical consumption for full-shift continuous operation. The maximum travel speed can be set at a reasonable higher level that meets local safety regulations, so the single transport cycle time for long distance routes can be shortened notably. Most models of this type are designed with optimized battery capacity to support all-day long run operation for multiple shifts. The only noticeable limitation is that it requires a wider operating channel than the walking type, to guarantee safe turning and movement with cargo loaded.
When selecting between these two types, facility managers can refer to the actual operation data of their own sites first. If more than 60% of daily transport tasks are longer than 50 meters, the operator-platform truck will bring better overall operation benefit. If most tasks are short distance connection work under 30 meters in narrow working zones, the operator-down pallet truck can meet the demand properly. It is also suggested to combine local on-site safety rules, operator usage habits and site layout to make the final decision, so as to maximize the value of material handling equipment for your facility.
