Many industrial facilities that store or process flammable and explosive substances will divide their operation areas into different risk zones in line with local safety regulatory requirements, to manage potential safety risks systematically. As electric forklifts are the core material handling equipment for indoor and closed areas, many facility operators lack clear awareness of the application boundary between standard electric forklifts and explosion-proof electric forklifts, which may lead to hidden safety risks or unnecessary cost waste.
A standard electric forklift is designed for general industrial handling scenarios with no flammable gas, flammable dust or volatile explosive medium existing in the working environment. Its core components including drive motor, controller, wiring harness, power contact and brake system follow general industrial electric equipment design standards, without additional special anti-spark, anti-overheating protection structure. It features low purchase cost, simple daily maintenance, stable operation performance and can meet the handling efficiency demand of ordinary warehouses, general assembly workshops and non-risk turnover areas.
Explosion-proof electric forklift is specially modified for operation scenarios with potential explosion risk. All parts that may produce electric arc, instantaneous spark or high temperature surface in the operation process are treated with flameproof sealing, intrinsically safe circuit encapsulation, or non-spark material cladding. It can avoid releasing enough ignition energy to ignite surrounding flammable media in normal operation or expected fault conditions. This type of equipment needs to pass formal performance verification to obtain corresponding operation qualification, and is suitable for zone-classified facilities where flammable media may appear occasionally or frequently.
The two types of electric forklifts have clear applicable boundaries. Operators are not allowed to use standard electric forklifts for short-term operation in high-risk classified zones even for temporary handling work, which will violate safety operation specifications and bring hidden risks of ignition. It is also not recommended to use explosion-proof electric forklifts in all ordinary non-risk areas without distinction, as its higher maintenance cost will cause unnecessary resource input. Facilities shall sort out the risk level of each operation zone in advance, select forklift products that match the corresponding safety protection level, and arrange regular inspection and maintenance to ensure long-term stable and compliant operation.
