As core material handling equipment widely used in modern warehouses, manufacturing workshops and logistics distribution centers, electric forklifts can be divided into two common categories according to operation modes: pedestrian-operated type and ride-on type. Travel speed is one of the most critical performance parameters that directly relates to operation safety, working efficiency and application scenario adaptability, and the design logic of this indicator shows clear differences between the two product types.
For pedestrian-operated electric forklifts, the whole operation process requires staff to walk alongside the vehicle to complete direction control, load picking and placing works, with no enclosed driving cab or independent safety protection structure around the operator. In conventional design, the no-load travel speed of this type of forklift is usually set within the range of 4 to 6 kilometers per hour, which basically matches the average comfortable walking speed of adults. When the vehicle carries rated loads, the system will automatically reduce the travel speed to 2 to 3 kilometers per hour to ensure operation stability. When the vehicle enters narrow working aisles or areas with dense pedestrian flow, operators can also trigger the limited low-speed mode to keep the moving speed below 1.5 kilometers per hour, effectively avoiding the risk of collision between personnel and goods during short-distance frequent transfer operations.
For ride-on electric forklifts, operators sit in the special driving position inside the vehicle, with complete safety protection components, stable view coverage and independent control system. The no-load travel speed of this type of forklift is usually set between 8 and 12 kilometers per hour, while the full-load travel speed is maintained at 5 to 7 kilometers per hour, which is suitable for large-span material transfer in large-area warehouses. This speed parameter design can effectively cut down the time cost of long-distance movement in the operation process.
The difference of travel speed parameters between the two types of electric forklifts is not a simple division of performance level, but a targeted adjustment based on actual operation scenarios. Equipment purchasers should select products with matching speed parameters according to their actual operation space size, daily transfer distance and personnel allocation conditions, and operators should not modify the power system privately to change the original speed limit setting, so as to maintain a safe and stable material handling operation environment.
