Ramp and loading dock areas are high-risk zones for electric forklift operations, where improper speed control easily leads to safety hazards such as sideslip, rollover and falling from the edge of docks. Reasonable, scenario-matched speed setting is one of the most cost-effective measures to eliminate hidden risks from the source.
For ramp operation scenarios, operators and safety managers need to set independent speed parameters different from flat warehouse areas. The preset maximum travel speed should match the actual ramp gradient, load weight and ground friction condition. When forklifts carry full loads on upward or downward ramps, the limited speed should not exceed the speed of normal human walking, to avoid sharp inertia change caused by sudden braking. It is also not allowed to set an excessively high speed value that may lead to sliding down the ramp once the braking system has small abnormal fluctuation. In the process of speed setting, the relevant personnel should also turn off the quick acceleration function specially for ramp sections, to ensure the operation stability during the whole driving process on ramps.
For loading dock areas, the speed setting logic needs to take multiple peripheral factors into consideration. Most dock areas have gaps between the platform and the compartment, frequent pedestrian crossing, and uncertain parking status of external transport vehicles. The maximum limited speed in the whole dock zone should be set lower than the standard travel speed in common indoor warehouse areas. For the warning area within 3 meters away from the dock edge, the system should automatically trigger the secondary low speed limit, to prevent misoperation that leads to the forklift rushing out of the platform. If the dock ground is covered with water, oil stains or other slippery substances after daily cleaning, the safety manager should further reduce the preset speed value temporarily till the hidden danger is cleared.
In the daily management process, the enterprise shall establish clear permission rule for speed parameter modification. Ordinary forklift operators are not authorized to change the pre-set speed values for ramp and dock zones without permission, to avoid blind adjustment for higher working efficiency. Only certified full-time safety administrators can adjust the parameters according to actual on-site condition changes. Regular inspection of the speed control module is also required, to make sure all the preset limits can work stably in different scenarios. Combined with regular safety training, the whole team can form good operation habits, and achieve a balanced state between operation efficiency and on-site safety.
